Tales from the Book Nerd-3

…because we could all use a good book and a stiff drink.

Two men standing in a field with dark clouds behind them.

Hello all! I hope this newsletter finds you well. The big news this month is that my first two books The Slaughtered Lamb Bookstore & Bar and The Dead Don’t Drink at Lafitte’s are Kindle Monthly Deals for September. If you know someone who might enjoy the series, please let them know they can pick up the first two books for only $0.99 each. There’s also a BookBub featured deal on Slaughtered Lamb, making it $0.99 across platforms.

All of this is leading up to the publication of book 3 The Wicche Glass Tavern* on October 5! Now’s when the panic sets in. Please let them like it! In this book, Sam delves more deeply into the world of the fae, meeting Gloriana herself. Sam gets her butt kicked by an Orc, comes face to face with her nemesis (“Effing kelpie!”), and calls the matriarch of the Dragon clan an asshole. In Sam’s defense, Benvair was being pretty assholey at the time.

*A note about the word wicche. I’ve seen a few reviews questioning the spelling. It’s actually a gender neutral, medieval word for a magical person. I didn’t want to use witch and wizard. I wanted one term for all.

SNEAK PEEK of The Hob & Hound Pub cover above! I’ll share the front cover later this year, but Russell and Godfrey wanted you to know they’d made the back cover (of the print edition). My daughter likes this cover the best of all my books. I look forward to sharing it with you soon.

Book Recommendation Corner
As I’m also a librarian, I want to share titles of amazing books you might want to pick up. I’ll switch up the genres in each newsletter. If you like any of the books I suggest, remember to write a quick review for it. Reviews helps authors <3

Science Fiction: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. I’m not normally a sci-fi reader, but my book club chose it, so I read it. It was fantastic! If you have the option to listen to the audiobook, I recommend that. Ray Porter, the narrator, is wonderful. One of the main characters is an alien who speaks in tones, rather than words. In the audio, you can hear the tonal language behind the English translation. In the story, the sun is dying and the whole world is working together to shoot astronauts into space to find the key to save us all. I loved it and was so sorry to see it end.

Young Adult: As I’m a young adult librarian, you’ll see this genre in every newsletter. This month’s recommendation is Legendborn by Tracy Deonn. Our main character Bree has just joined a special program for advanced high school students at UNC-Chapel Hill. On her first night on campus, she witnesses a couple of teens hunting down and killing a demon. None of the other party-goers can see what Bree sees. She learns quickly that she possesses the same kind of magic the Legendborn, or demon hunters, have. Her world shifts dramatically as she learns the depths of her own power.

Fantasy: Written in Red by Anne Bishop. This is the first inThe Others series. Our main character Meg is a run away Cassandra sangue, a woman who sees prophesies when her skin is cut. She’s been imprisoned all her life, herprecious skin cut for another’s profit. When we meet her, she’s escaped into the world of the Others, powerful supernaturals who rule the resentful humans. I love Meg, Simon (wolf) Henry (bear), and Meg (a being so scary even the Others give her a wide berth).
😊 Happy Reading!
